Then I will need another eyepiece case!
What's wrong with that?

This friend of yours have his own line of ball eyepieces?
I'd recommend the 8mm over the 6mm, more for versatility and comfort than optical differences. Besides, you...er...your friend...has a 6mm ZAO II. There is no 8mm ZAO II, however, so the Brandon in that focal length supplements rather than overlaps the ZAO IIs.
Besides, I can't stand to see a grown man cry. Imagine how updset you...I mean your friend would be if the affordable 6mm Brandon schpanked der sour kraut out of the loftily priced ZAO-II.
Regards,
Jim

Get both! If you're only getting one, I agree with Jim above, for the reason he said; but the 6mm is *such* a great eyepiece, it's hard not to say "get the 6mm!". Besides, then you can leave the ZAOs locked in the vault.

So here's just another suggestion that you just do what your muse is whispering, enticing, and compelling you to do. Indeed, I can only echo Jim and Rick re: If you canonly get one then get the 8mm. BUT, (cue quiet Jedi theme in background), when you see as you will see through the 8mm, you will not be able to rest until you complete your Jedi training with the 6mm.
Or so I believe.

Ok, ok, I can't take anymore! Theoretically speaking, let's say, I knew someone with a TEC140, would you Brandon guys recommend the 8mm or the 6mm to my friend, if either one should appear in the CN classifieds.
Steve, absolutely! And I'd like to get your impressions of it against a ZAOII. I can't make a direct compare of my 6mm Brandon and 4mm ZAOII...I passed on the new "OLD" 4mm that Don released from his stock.
I'll talk to my friend and see what he wants to do. It just occured to me that the definitive 6mm shoot-out has already been done, that may factor into my friend's decision. I have serious competition at 8mm and 10mm also, although I might have to intoduce the Denk Powerswitch into the mix at 8 & 10mm.

He's been very supportive of the worthy cause, so he got a complimentary set of Couture EPs. I think I'll try the 8mm, Bill P did the definitive 6mm comparison. Ooops, did I say I'll try the 8mm Brandon.

Hi Rick,
Nothing gets locked in a vault. The ZAO II's and S-monos are used all the time. My Naglers are the EPs I hardly use.

I looked through an Ethos once. An 8mm, in fact. It might have been a decent eyepiece had the purpose of looking through it not been to compare its on-axis performance to the on-axis performance of the 8mm Brandon and the 7mm Meade Research Grade Orthoscopic. It was weighed in the balance and found wanting. I believe the owner sold it a short time later. Still, if for some reason you need a very wide field of view, and are willing to sacrifice on-axis performance in exchange, the Ethos is an adequate eyepiece, I suppose. Of course, it's hard to understand what it adds over a 7mm Nagler Type 6...Other than several hundred dollars and a pound that is.

I have an 8mm Ethos and an 8mm Brandon. I find the Brandon to be a pretty good eyepiece and do use it on occasion. But between the two of them the Ethos finds its way into my focuser most of the time. I find its performace exceptional in every way. What it adds over the 7mm Nagler are a significantly wider field, greater contrast, more eye relief and almost no field curvature.
I'm currently evaluating several simpler design eyepieces for planetary detail use and several have exceeded my expectations...including the Brandons.
That said, I'll be keeping my Ethos and the Brandons have yet to "turn water into wine."

T.R., does your Brandon 50th anniversary set have eyecups on them?

The eyecups from Brandon are slip-ons(not like the TV's), Don gave me a a few of them when I visited the shop. They didn't come with the 50th's. I have found that with short eye relief eyepieces, I prefer no eyecup, as they seem to fog up easier without air getting to them to keep them clear. In 35 years, I have yet to use dew-heaters. YMMV

I'm starting to find that almost universally I do not like rubber eye cups, I get a more immersive view without them, I feel like I am falling into space. The eyecups seem to ground me for some reason. The Brandon Golds are absolutely perfect in this regard, the 24 and 32 are like peering into a magical glass porthole.

You'll want to hurry. I ordered mine yesterday and Don said there were less than 20 sets left!!!
I have a feeling 4 years from now people will be sitting around a campfire talking about that day you could order 6 Brandons and a case for the price of 4.... Sean

Just sticking to the 8mm, I also love mine! Also have the ZAOII's and yes it fits nicely into the lineup. I've only used it extensively in my ~f/8 refractors, but it has been a 'keeper', does great on planets but also very keen on nebula, smaller planetay nebula, Luna. I haven't compared it much on globular clusters yet to say. In the times when the sky has allowed it has compared favorably with my 4mm ZAOII with a 2x Barlow on the objects I've tried it on - mainly planetary on Jupiter and Saturn. Hope you have a lot of clear skies to enjoy your 8mm Brandon!
