OBSERVATORY MODIFICATION PLAN

Currently the view of elevation 65 degree to 90 degree is blocked by the upper dome wavle. I am planning to change this problem . The below is my idea I got today , I want to note it down first , and see what time it will be modifield by me .

I am thinking of shifiting the dome backwards , such that the zenith , or ( may be the sky zone of elevation about 65 degree - 90 degree ) will not be blocked by the upper walves of the dome . I am thinking of adding 3 small lifting mechanices outside the dome , such that the dome can be rasied up around 15 cm( weight of dome plus track is more than 50KG) , in that case the dome and the inner wheels of the upper track is lifted above the lower metal track( a circular container track indeed) , and thus it can be moved backward to any distance . The lifting mechanices contains the wheels as well . And after used , it can be moved and lowered down to place back to the lower track again .
It should contains a big screw that can be scrolled to lift or to set down movement EASILY of the dome base .
That's my current simplest idea, in order I can see more wider view of the sky above my head .

Just saw this thread, Mandi! Great job thus far. Modifying rit so you can get at or close to zenith is a good idea. You will have your darkest skies there.

Wonderful thread!

MANDII, here are a couple amateurs from Hong Kong; do you recognize them? The tall guys are Don Parker and Tom Dobbins.

MandII,

Check out the Skyshed POD site. They have adesign for a DIY setup that allows them to lift off the dome and slide it back on a shelf. I know it is not your observatory, but you may get some ideas.

Thank you all of you to have a look on my this build , very nice to hear some of the HK amatures are reaching their steps to somewhere in the world , Or probably the Mars is your next target ?? LOL .

That modification is just an idea so far , I am now thinking of how to get the lifting tools from the local market . But it's not really possible to have one excatly fit the size or something usuable . Thus, most likely I may need to DIY at final . I really need to check more on this part . As Herman mentioned the POD site , yes , I thought POD is one very similar to my Obs . Need to find some idea from it , that's true .

And thanks Bowmoreman to spend your reading time on my thread as well . I will update this modification status . This time it seems a big task since my first bulit , but such problem is neccessarily needed some kind of changes .

CHANGES evrybody !!

I had reached to a status last night .

I found something( the red one in pic.) that I thought it may be usable for this time in a retail shop , it looks like a clipper with a 15cm mouth . I got it at 50HKD for each and purchase two of them , just for testing at first . You know everything should be simple and easy to make this time , for me .
It is now being enhanced like a screwing lifter , with wheels . This is just my first attempt to see if it is really able to lift up the dome , you know the dome and the metal track is very heavy .. . Next step I need to added an metal plate on the track of the dome , it extend out to a distance that it is put over on the lifter screw . And then after that I can be able to test the lifter . But such metal plate seems not easy to make one by me now ... Anyway , lets see it .

I got these two deep sky recently . M42 & M45 .
Using digital camera to do afocal imaging .
The photo is processed in IRIS and GIMP , keep it samely as much as actual visually observed in eyepiece . The M45 is so bright and beautiful in eyepiece .

Happy new lunar year .

Today I had finished a metal grapper and tried my first attempt to lift the dome , but it failed .
I made a metal grapper indeed , it just slot into the side of the dome track , in such way it's more simplier that I don't need to do some screwing on the metal dome track to anchore the grapper. I don't need to change the dome and the lower dome track .

but the whole machine is still not able to lift up the dome , I still need to modify this lifting machine ...

Finally I change my mind a bit , and solve this problem in a very simple and easy way . I use two short wooden rods , a square board,a small brick and the one metal graper/hooker that I made last time . As you can see the picture one those things I need .
So this time I just stand inside the observatory , at first turn around the dome to a position that I needed , then one hand I hold one of the rod , 2nd hand I use my 90 degree graper to hook the upper metal dome track , push it up with my biggest force and keep my breath for 2 seconds , and suck the rod in between the track immediately . That's the point ! I suck two rods at the both side of the dome by the above same method , and finally one more the square wooden board at the back side of the dome . After that , the dome becomes floating , I can easily shift backwards or forward as the two wooden rods rolls on the lower dome track . The back side wooden board just put a small brick to hold it . That's all of what I need to do , it just take me less than 3 minutes of time to complete the whole procedures .

I am very happy now as I sit inside the dome and test to move my newtonian telescope to a pointing direction even bigger than 90 degree zenith( picture 4) . And those wider view above my head can be seen pleasurely .

This way is simple and good , it works very well !
Happy to all of you .
Today is a good day .

Best Regards ,
MANDII
