Decisions - LX200 12 classic - repair or re-mount new
      #4953284 - 12/06/11 01:12 PM

I just picked up a LX200 classic 12". The goals were to get a larger scope with goto capabilities, but still have a semi portable setup. I sold my Cave 10" scope to do this - it was not portable nor goto. I can move the 12" sct onto the mount and set it up by myself, so it fits the criteria.

The gentleman I bought it from had received it to cover a loan, and knew nothing about the scope. He thought the scope was in solid working order, so on I went to Greenville, SC to pick it up.

When I got there, I hooked it up to do some basic tests, and the scope immediately had the dreaded Dec drive run away problem.

There was no wedge. The controller works well, as does the RA drive.

I wound up purchasing the scope based on the value of the OTA and now have it home. After some more testing, the DEC drive definitely has issues.

--------------------

Being an intrepid LX200 user, I have performed some low level investigation of how to work on the drive. There is some good information out there, but I have never soldered anything before, and am nervous to start on this mount.

So - it would seem that if I am to keep the mount I would want to get all the capacitors upgraded in the drives and in the handset, and get what ever issues need repaired in the DEC drive fixed. I could only find one place to send this to (Astronomy Shoppe) and it would run at least $300 to get everything done, more if the motor or gears need replaced.

I also spoke to Camera Bug here in Atlanta, who used to repair LX200 drives. They no longer have any parts, and would have to get a replacement drive, which would probably cost more than the $300 repair.

---------------------------------

So - decision time - fix this, or sell the mount for parts and move on.

The working LX200 controller has some solid value, as does the tripod. The base is in good shape. I'd guess you could sell everything for between $200 and $350 (an LX200 controller just sold for $250 on ebay - amazing).

I have a nice Sirius EQ-G mount - this OTA is heavier than that mount would support. I could potentially sell the parts, sell the EQ-G and move up to an Atlas or another mount to hold this OTA.

Or - I could get this fixed. I've had a few classic LX200s in the past, and enjoyed using them (10" and a 7"). Both were excellent optically. I had good luck with GOTO performance.

---------------------------------

What would you do? Am I throwing money into the fire fixing this mount?

Any other options out there for fixing this mount? It appears there are no longer replacement gears available.

If replace is the option - what mount would be suggested for mounting the OTA (primarily visual use).

Thanks for your thoughts...

Clear Skies - Ben

Repairing seems the cheapest way to go.

Check this site out...

http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/LX200Autostar/

$420-490 and it will take you up to the Autostar 495/497 controller as well.

Hi Ben,

I've owned a 12" LX200 for the past 11 years and ... as you already know ... the fork mount with a short SCT is more compact and portable than the equivalent GEM with a full size OTA. The DEC runaway problem is common and it's usually an easy and inexpensive fix.

See the Mapug Group website for just about everything you need to know about the 12" LX200 scope:

http://www.mapug-astronomy.net/AstroDesigns/MAPUG/ArhvList.htm

And how to fix DEC runaway:

http://www.bbcl03736.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/LX200%20Faults.htm

Also, contact "George D" on the CN "Meade ACF/RCX/LX GPS Forum" ... he makes a complete, quick "swap-out" upgrade kit for the LX200 mounts from $420 - $490. He also has a Yahoo Group: LX200Autostar. Considering what you can get for the used parts ... this might be the way to go.

There's a lot of life left in the old LX200 mounts. I'd fix or upgrade your mount and save the cost and time involved with remounting the OTA on a new GEM mount.

Jim

I would try to repair the Dec runaway problem myself, if I had the time to do so and if it wouldn't cost too much. However, I would be far more likely to sell the fork and mount for what ever I could get and invest in a good GEM.

I have gotten in touch with George Cushing.

George repairs LX200 components. I sent him the DEC drive and the hand controller - asked him to replace the troublesome capacitors for insurance, and to get the DEC working.

I also joined the LX200Autostar yahoo forum - interesting. I have to get the mount working as is first, but that is a pretty cool conversion that George has put together.

That said, I do think this would be a sweet scope sitting on top of an Atlas mount, and am really thinking about upgrading from my Sirius...

Thanks to all for the help!

Clear skies...

Ben

It has been a few months, but I wanted to report back on the repair work that George did for me.

He replaced the caps in the handset and DEC drive, and got the drive working perfectly.

GOTOs are now spot on. I've really enjoyed the scope. I'd go with George again in a heartbeat.

I am glad your repairs have made your 'scope functional again! But I did want to chime in with this bit of advice, based on something you mentioned. And that was about remounting onto an Atlas.
I do believe you would be very "undermounted" to put that much mass onto an Atlas.
I have an 10" LX200 ACF mounted on an Atlas and I feel I am currently right at the limits of usefulness for visual applications. The 12 is heavier and larger and would only compromise the set-up more.
Moot point if you are staying with the LX mount... so good luck with that!

I appreciate that Alan, as I was thinking of an Atlas. I've had a Sirius mount, and really liked it.

Also - I thought the specs on the LX were a bit miss-leading, especially if you look at what you can actually load on one axis.

The good news is the original mount (now really refurbished) works very nicely. Maybe need to get a wedge and some nice wheely bars.

Planetary views lately have been really bad with waves of distortion moving across the views. Don't think cooling has been a problem.

The 12" is a fantastic scope for splitting doubles and any faint fuzzies...
